Three things to know

HBR comes out swinging this week with a bold headline.  The article compares the evolution of Blockchain to the evolution of the internet.  The authors note that the killer app for the internet was email and assert that the killer app for Blockchain is bitcoin.  Overall, the authors point out that though Blockchain will take time to mature, as it does it will transform most aspects of financial services. Those that thrive in the transformed industry will be the banks that are now experimenting with and developing Blockchain.  The Blockchain Will Do to Banks and Law Firms What the Internet Did to Media

This year is indeed shaping up to be the year Blockchain goes into production.  This week ING and Soc Gen announced they have tested a system for trading liquefied natural gas (LNG) and is likely to expand further later this year.  In the test, the Blockchain platform reduced processes from as long as three hours to 25 minutes and realized cost savings of 30%.  Exclusive: ING, SocGen to test LNG trading with blockchain in months

Another live Blockchain trial also occurred in the supply chain of the global shipping company Maersk.  Maersk teamed with Schneider Electric for the trans-Atlantic shipment.  The Maersk Blockchain was built using Hyperledger and utilized four nodes.  The test resulted in lower costs, reduced fraud, and more efficient container management.  The successful test has encouraged Maersk to identify additional applications for Blockchain.
